Board approves reduction of parking spaces for Dollar General

Aug. 24—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown Board of Adjustment unanimously approved on Wednesday, Aug. 24, a reduction in parking spaces for a new store at 424 4th Ave. NE in Jamestown.

Dollar General Corp. requested a reduction in parking spaces from 71 to 60. Tom Blackmore, zoning administrator, said the city of Jamestown's municipal code for retail establishments requires one parking space for each 150 square feet of gross floor area and Dollar General proposed a reduction of one space for every 177 square feet of gross floor area.

"Their data indicates that they only really require 35 parking spaces to facilitate their needs," he said.

Dollar General has more than 18,000 stores in the U.S. and sells a variety of products for low prices, according to its website.

Colby 2022 LLC is the applicant for the building ordinance variance.

Blackmore said Dollar General has applied for a zoning map amendment. He said the property at 424 4th Ave. NE is currently zoned a general multiple dwelling district, and Dollar General requested a change to a local commercial district.

He said the future Land Use and Transportation Plan in Jamestown shows the property zoned as commercial.

"Looking at that, this would appear to be a good fit for commercial use," he said.
