BMW trademarks iX3 and other possible electric SUV badges

We've already seen a glimpse of BMW's electric vehicle plans. Most recently, the company showcased its Vision Dynamics Concept, which could use the i5 moniker when a production version comes our way in 2021. The company also confirmed an electric Mini and BMW X3. Now, as Auto Express reports, trademark applications from BMW suggest further EVs to come, as well as a name for the electric version of the X3 SUV.

According to the report, the German automaker has applied for trademarks for iX1, iX9, and everything in between. BMW is expected to follow up an electric Mini in 2019 with an electric version of the X3 SUV for 2020. These trademark applications suggest it could be called the iX3. The other badge trademarks indicate the possibility of a larger lineup of electric utes from BMW.

The naming also suggests that the iX3 EV will be based on the X3, rather than standing alone as a completely separate model.

BMW plans to offer 25 electrified models by 2025, with about half of those being all-electric. Don't be surprised when a fair share of them are CUVs/SUVs. That's a hot segment right now, and equipping them with electric powertrains is an obvious way to help make EVs go mainstream. Mitsubishi, Nissan and Hyundai (and others) are figuring that out. It appears BMW has, too.
