From the factory, BMW electronically limits the top speed of its M3 sedan to 155 mph, or 180 mph if you option the M Driver's Package. It can go much faster, of course, but how much faster? No one could give us the answer... until now, that is.

The AutoTopNL YouTube channel got ahold of a lightly modified six-speed M3 to see just how fast it could go when given the room. Aside from some wheels, a new exhaust, a different intake, and a tune to remove the limiter, it's pretty much stock, giving us a good idea of how a factory M3 would do without its electronic restrictions in place.

During a top-speed test on the unrestricted German Autobahn, AutoTopNL is able to achieve an indicated top speed of 197 mph. The channel also used its phone to show GPS tracking speed, which indicated a maximum speed of 313 km/h (194 mph). That is some serious speed.

With a bit more tuning to squeeze some extra power from that twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six under the hood, we have no doubts this car would be able to cross the 200-mph barrier. We suspect it's only a matter of time before that happens.
