Blue Jays recover from series of blunders for walk-off win over Yankees

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays shot themselves in the foot on Friday, but like most shots to the foot, it didn’t prove fatal.

After a disastrous five-run fifth inning that involved a cascade of fielding blunders from an awful Teoscar Hernandez sliding catch attempt to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. throwing to the wrong base, it looked like Toronto was set on giving the New York Yankees their 98th win.

Thanks to Bo Bichette, that’s not how things played out.

Leading off the bottom of the twelfth inning, the confident rookie strode to the plate and delivered a home run to give Toronto a 6-5 win.

The Blue Jays got to that position in the first place thanks to a Cavan Biggio RBI single and an Adam Ottavino balk to score Richard Urena in the seventh as they slowly crawled their way back into the game. The septet of Buddy Boshers, Sam Gaviglio, Derek Law, Ken Giles, Tim Mayza (who left with an injury after facing one batter), Ryan Tepera and Wilmer Font also made the win possible by keeping the Yankees completely under wraps.

With the victory, the Blue Jays move to 58-90 and move closer to avoiding their first 100-loss season since 1979.
