Disney released the first official trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King Monday, featuring a young and scruffy Mufasa’s rise as king of Pride Lands.

Mufasa: The Lion King marks the prequel to the 2019 live-action remake The Lion King, where Donald Glover and Beyoncé took on the roles of adult Simba and Nala, respectively. In the Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) prequel, Blue Ivy Carter joins the cast as the young lioness Kiara, the daughter of King Simba (Glover) and Queen Nala (Beyoncé). In Mufasa: The Lion King, which blends live-action filmmaking with photo-realistic, computer-generated images, shaman Rafiki recites the story of an orphaned Mufasa through flashbacks. Mufasa meets royal heir Taka, also known as Scar (Kelvin Harrion Jr.), who accepts Mufasa as a brother.

Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner return as hilarious pals Pumbaa and Timon, and Aaron Pierre replaces the great James Earl Jones, who had held the role since the 1994 original, as Mufasa. Other cast members include John Kani (Rafiki), Kagiso Lediga (Young Rafiki), Anika Noni Rose (Mufasa’s mother Afia), Keith David (Mufasa’s father Masego), Tiffany Boone (Sarabi), Preston Nyman (Zazu), Mads Mikkelsen (Kiros), Thandiwe Newton (Taka’s mother Eshe), and Lennie James (Taka’s father Obasi).

Lin-Manual Miranda will write the film’s songs and will serve as co-producer with Mark Mancina. Lebo M will perform additional music.

“Elton John. Tim Rice. Hans Zimmer. Lebo M. Mark Mancina. Beyoncé, Labrinth, Ilya Salmanzadeh. Beau Black, Ford Riley, the incredible music team on ‘The Lion Guard,’ and so many musical contributors over the years. The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it,” Miranda said in a statement. “It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters.”

Mufasa: The Lion King arrives in theaters Dec. 20.
