Meet Young Angelina Jolie in 'Maleficent': Actress Ella Purnell

Who could you possibly cast to play a young Angelina Jolie in Maleficent? Meet Ella Purnell.

The 17-year-old starlet is featured in the summer issue of V magazine, where she opens up about her role in the Disney flick. "There's a joke in my family that I'm going to make a career out of playing other people's younger selves," she laughs. "I played the younger Keira [Knightley] and now I'm playing the younger Angelina. I mean, it's a good track record, right?"

When Purnell played a young Ruth, Knightley's character in the 2010 flick Never Let Me Go,  the resemblance was uncanny.  But Jolie, the executive producer and lead actress in Maleficent, must have seen a bit of herself in the teen because she personally handpicked Ella for the role after she had originally auditioned for the part of Princess Aurora. Purnell wasn't expecting to book the gig and was surprised to receive it while recovering from a hospital stay for appendicitis. "I was sitting home with greasy hair, with like operation stuff, half conscious, coming off the anesthetics," she shares. Real glamorous, huh?

But Purnell doesn't only look like Jolie, she aspires to direct like her, too. (She's already directed a school play.) "I want to be a part of a movie that changes people's conceptual framework and suddenly you see things in a different way," the young actress tells the mag.
