We all know that Kevin Williamson knows how to make us scream. He reminded us last year with "The Following," a dark tale of a tormented FBI agent, Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), grappling with a serial killer/professor/bone-chilling weirdo/cult leader Dr. Joe Carroll (James Purefoy).
When we left off last season, Hardy jumped through figurative hoops and literal flames to rescue Claire (Natalie Zea). With Carroll presumably dead in the postfight explosion, things were looking up. Ryan had Claire back safe in his apartment. But of course, that's when his ex Molly (Jennifer Ferrin) — revealed as a Carroll follower — popped by ... with a knife.
What's next? A lot more masks, apparently. The narration is titillating, to say the least: "In life we all make masks to hide behind. We might make a mask to disguise our true intentions, another to hide our sins. The thing about masks — you can't hide behind them forever, and there's always one that gives you away."
Between the cover of the '80s stalker hit "Obsession" and the homespun, intricate masks, we are definitely in for some major chills.
"The Following" returns January 2014.
