Marvel Comes to 'The Colbert Report' to Announce a New Captain America

For the second time in as many days, Marvel has gone to TV to make a major announcement about its comic books. On Tuesday morning, The View announced that the mantle of Thor would be taken up by a woman and Wednesday night, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada returned to The Colbert Report to tell the world that Sam Wilson will be the new Captain America.

Sam Wilson, better known as Falcon — who is celebrating his 45th anniversary in comics this year — will replace the original Captain, Steve Rogers. This isn't the first time Rogers has been replaced — most recently, sidekick Bucky Barnes filled in. It remains to be seen whether or not this is a permanent change.

Will this new Cap make it to the big screen? Chris Evans has said that he's retiring from acting after his contract with Marvel is up. Maybe Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in this year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier could take up the cinematic mantle. Quesada made it clear on The Colbert Report that, "This is strictly in the comics," and that comic and cinematic continuity would continue to be separate. But if Wilson proves popular enough, who knows?

Stephen Colbert has quite a history with Marvel. Quesada has been on the show multiple times, including the time he came on to let Colbert know he was running for president in the Marvel Universe (he won the popular vote, but lost the electoral college to President Obama).

Then there was the time that Quesada sent Colbert the Captain America shield that still hangs on his wall.

And of course, back in April, two weeks after the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there was this tweet in reference to the film's main baddies:

That's two days in a row that Marvel has made a big push into cross-media promotion ahead of next week's San Diego Comic-Con. Will there be more? What show would you like to see the next Marvel announcement made? What other announcements would you like to hear? With a black Captain America and a female Thor, the Avengers line-up is getting pretty diverse (though the Hulk is still the original person of color on the team).

The Colbert Report airs Mondays through Thursday evenings at 11:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
