Does Mindy Kaling have an Emmy nomination in the bag?

It seems that way, considering the Mindy Project actress has been tapped to announce the 2014 Emmy Award nominations alongside Carson Daly on July 10. In eight of the last 10 years, at least one of the announcers earned an individual nod.

So, unless Daly has managed to burrow his way into the Reality TV Host category — possible, but unlikely — Kaling might get her first Emmy nomination ever as a lead actress in a comedy.

For instance, last year’s Emmy nominations announcers were Aaron Paul and ceremony host Neil Patrick Harris (who subbed in at the last minute for travel-delayed House of Cards star Kate Mara). Paul received his fourth nomination for playing meth dealer Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad. Mara herself was not nominated, but her presence would have foretold the Netflix drama’s history-making nine nominations.

Then again, the choice of Kaling and Daly could be entirely about business. The Emmys are airing on NBC this year; Daly is host of NBC’s Last Call With Carson Daly and reality hit, The Voice, while The Mindy Project is produced by NBC Universal Television.

In other words, this could just be NBC trying to promote their stars in any way they can. Consider that two years ago, ABC aired the ceremony and nominations were announced by Scandal queen Kerry Washington and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. Neither received individual nominations, but both are ABC stars. Coincidence? We think not.

We’re hoping the bubbly and vivacious — and totally hilarious — Kaling has a shot at a nomination. So far, only three of GoldDerby.com’s 13 experts predict she’ll walk away with one, though.

The 2014 Emmy nominations will be announced at 5:40 a.m. PT on Thursday, July 10. The ceremony takes place on Aug. 25.
