A Second-by-Second Dissection of the New 'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 Teaser

When Boardwalk Empire returns for a fifth and final season this fall, it's not a question of who will die… but will anybody even survive?

A new teaser video shows just how desperate all the characters are — even the usually cool, calm, and collected Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). As the Roaring '20s fade, and the Great Depression looms, Nucky has to scramble to hold onto the bit of power he still has in his grasp.

We analyzed the promo to discover which characters will definitely be back, who's in control (and who's out of control), and whether Nucky can come out on top:

0:00 - A shot of the back of Nucky's head as he sits in a boardroom. "There's forgiveness for everyone," a woman whispers.

0:04 - A glimpse of the mystery woman who is speaking. "That's what Jesus said," she adds.

0:08 - "Baby girl, Jesus was wrong," replies a grizzled-looking Chalky White. Michael K. Williams has said that the show jumps forward seven years in time, and it seems those years have not treated Chalky too kindly.

0:13 - Nucky enters his nightclub, followed by a flash of black prisoners walking in a line, followed by a shot of worn-down Chalky.

0:20 - Gillian (Gretchen Mol) looks stressed as she takes a bath — while all tied up. Seems as though she's been taken to the madhouse, and the bath cover is meant to prevent her from drowning herself.

0:25 - Her onetime lover, Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza) broodingly gazes out a rain-slicked window. Considering the real-life Luciano's story, we wouldn't be surprised to see Lucky become more of a major player this season.

0:29 - Hands up! Two men are subject to an armed robbery.

0:32 - Dancers prance across the stage, a performer winks at the audience.

0:34 - Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) stares down someone sitting opposite him. Last we saw Narcisse, he was at the mercy of J. Edgar Hoover (Eric Ladin).

0:36 - Glimpses of other characters who will still be around, including Nucky's ex-wife Margaret (Kelly Macdonald), Nelson Van Alden/George Mueller (Michael Shannon), and Al Capone (Steven Graham).

0:38 - And the spot ends with a barrage of violence and sex, Boardwalk Empire's bread and butter, and the words "No One Goes Quietly."

The final season of Boardwalk Empire starts Sept. 7 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
