Being a newcomer to "The Vampire Diaries" can be a dangerous proposition, considering the death rate in Mystic Falls.
So, while Kendrick Sampson is enjoying his time as Jesse, the Whitmore College student who may be a love interest for Caroline, he isn't counting on graduating!
Sampson chatted with Yahoo TV about what good guy Jesse has been up to since Dr. Maxfield forced him to turn into a vampire. Plus, he weighs in on Jesse and Caroline's budding friendship/romance and whether Klaroline fans are ready to stake him!
1. Jesse's MIA! Where is he?
It seems like he's hidden away right now. He might make an appearance this week. The only thing I guess I can say is that it seems like he's being tortured right now, so he's indisposed, unfortunately (laughs).
2. Caroline actually left him a voicemail and it seems she's really worried about him. What can we expect from their relationship?
I'm hoping that it moves forward, and that they get to know each other better. Maybe he's saved, who knows?
3. Caroline has so many men revolving around her, and fans want her with Klaus, Tyler, even Stefan. What does Jesse offer?
He's not a rage-head (laughs). He's definitely not a murderer. So far, anyway. He's no Klaus! Klaus is just so cool, so I get it — I get why everybody wants them to be together. If you kill that many people and everybody's still rooting for you, you can't get much cooler than that. [Klaus] is a psychopath. Jesse is psychopath-less. And Tyler has this obsession with Klaus and this desire to seek revenge. The only conflict we know of with Jesse is with his ex-girlfriend, and she's nowhere to be found. So I think he offers less drama and sincerity and the desire to help.
4. Will we be learning more about Jesse's background?
That would be cool. You'll find out more about him, definitely. I'm not sure how deep they may go into his background. You'll find out he may be connected to some characters in a way you may not have thought.
5. What was it like shooting those scenes when Dr. Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) turned you?
They're really intense. Very intense. It's not every day you're strapped down to a table, so it was definitely a new challenge for me. And I'm starved and tortured and can't do much about it as of now. Those scenes were pretty awesome.
6. This season, "Vampire Diaries" moved to college. Was there concern about that transition?
You know, it's kind of fun, because I never went to college, so sitting in a class — even the classroom set was pretty awesome. I felt like I was actually in college. I feel like a lot of shows, when they transition into college, try to make it a lot bigger and try to go overboard. I feel like they kept the same tone and the same theme, and still connecting it to Mystic Falls.
7. There are some ardent Klaroline and Forwood fans. Did you get any feedback about getting in the middle?
Yeah, I definitely got a lot of that before the show aired. I was like, "How did people even find me?!" The "Vampire Diaries" fanbase is determined. They are a crafty bunch. They definitely found me and expressed their opinions (laughs).
After the show aired, the negativity subsided, almost to zilch now. There are still some diehard Klaroline fans, and I respect that. But no, they're fun and really nice. Everybody's been really supportive.
8. The show just filmed its 100th episode. Was it hard joining such an established cast?
They accepted me pretty quickly and everybody there is so hospitable. We're filming in Atlanta, so maybe that had to do with Southern hospitality. I'm a huge foodie, so as soon as they found that out, everybody — especially Kat [Graham] and Nina [Dobrev] were like, "These are all the spots, I've got a list, this is where you've got to go." They took us out. Steven [McQueen] is a bit of a workout-aholic, like me, so we bonded on that. Everybody was just really open to give advice and help out in any way they could.
9. So, you can't say too much about what happens on the show, but we can probably safely assume that there will be some crazy cliffhangers?
Absolutely. It wouldn't be "Vampire Diaries" without them — so many twists and turns and a whole lot of cliffhangers to keep everybody excited.
