Take a Look at Lace

"All things old are officially cool," Elle magazine declares in its Fall 2011 Trend Report. And lace, whether on the red carpet as celebs love to wear it or on a blouse paired with dressy jeans, is the perfect example. Not only was the lace look a trend at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards last month, but it filled the fall runways of New York, Milan, and Paris during Fashion Week.

Minka Kelly wowed at the September 18 TV honors in a navy Christian Dior creation with her hair pulled back, and paired the dress with Barbara Bui pumps and diamond drop earrings. On the same night, the glam Gwyneth Paltrow proved that a little fashion risk can pay off big in a black, midriff-baring Emilio Pucci dress made of lace, accessorized simply with loose locks. While her see-through ensemble is not the kind of thing we're used to seeing at the soiree, it's hard to deny that the "Glee" guest star's look was a winner!

Meanwhile, both "New Girl" Zooey Deschanel and teen queen Selena Gomez have tried on the trend, too. Zooey rocked her modern take on lace with a short, black flirty frock by Collette Dinnigan with Sergio Rossi pumps at a Fox party in Culver City, California, on September 12. Justin Bieber's best girl, Selena Gomez, dared to don lace on a dramatic black dress with Brian Atwood pumps, gold Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and a Judith Leiber clutch for the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on August 28.

Don't have a red carpet event to attend? No matter. Glamour magazine's Slaves to Fashion blog explains that the best thing about the lace trend is that you can wear it to work! They suggest wearing a lace-trimmed blouse with something more masculine, like wide-leg trousers, and pairing a lacy skirt with a fitted button-down shirt to "balance out the lace's girliness."
