Season 9 "American Idol" semifinalist Todrick Hall has practically created a cottage industry for himself as a premiere creator of viral videos — among them a Target flashmob dance that won the praise of Beyoncé; an online "Glee" audition that Ryan Murphy really should've taken seriously; an LMFAO medley with "Sing-Off" winners Pentatonix shot in a public restroom; a modern-day "Cinderfella" fairytale starring Janice Dickinson and Lance Bass; and a "Beauty & The Beast" parody starring Antoine Dodson and former Idols Katie Stevens and Vonzell Solomon.
And now, thanks to his "Beauty and the Beat" tour de force, Todrick is being managed by music industry power-player Scooter Braun, the mastermind behind the successful careers of Carly Rae Jepsen, PSY, and of course, Justin Bieber. Talk about a fairytale!
"I make YouTube viral videos all the time, and I made a video called 'Beauty and the Beat,'" Todrick tells Yahoo!'s Reality Rocks. "And as a strange, wacky coincidence, Justin Bieber dropped the song 'Beauty and a Beat.' Scooter saw it and he was like, 'Why is this video getting so much traction?' — thinking maybe that the [Justin] song had leaked or something. And then he saw my videos, so he reached out to me."
Recalls Todrick: "He was like, 'Listen, dude, I don't know what it is that you do or where you're trying to go, but I just am a fan and I would love to help you get there, because I sat down and watched your videos and you made me laugh and you entertained me.' I was flattered and honored, because this is someone that I watched his dreams come true. I watched Never Say Never and stuff, and it's always just refreshing when you see someone that's just as nice and humble and down-to-earth in person as they are on TV."
So what's next for Todrick and Scooter? What's their master plan for PSY-like world domination?
"I don't really know exactly what the plan is…I'm not a person that's just pursuing acting or just pursuing singing or just pursuing dancing,'" says Todrick. "You know, I would love to do reality television, I would like to go back to Broadway. Basically I told him at our first meeting that I want to win an EGOT [Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony]. And he was like, 'Okay, let's get an EGOT.'"
Says Todrick: "I'm really excited, and I love the energy that we have at the office when I go in. He's like a big kid. He reminds me of a Willy Wonka, and I'm excited to just be part of his chocolate factory."
Todrick's next viral-video venture, out later this week, will be the Beyoncé-inspired "Grown Woman," starring "X Factor" Season 2 contestant Paige Thomas. You can watch a teaser for the video below:
