ACM Awards Wedding Confuses Viewers

It's pretty hard to surprise a town that's known for wild, wacky, impromptu, and/or over-the-top weddings with...a wedding. But that's just what happened in Las Vegas Sunday night, when a couple chose to tie the knot on the stage of the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards.

The concept behind the ACM wedding--which was broadcast live on TV along with the rest of the awards show--was actually quite sweet in theory. Country star Martina McBride, who was asked to perform her latest single "Marry Me" at the awards, had the idea that it would be fun to have an actual wedding conducted on stage while she sang the romantic ballad.

The show's producers agreed, a lucky real-life couple (with a unique love story) was selected for the honor, and the event promised to be a real tearjerker.

Instead...well, McBride herself admitted the day before the show that "we really don't know how [we're] gonna pull this off"--and, unfortunately, the results were indeed a bit bizarre.

All the elements taken by themselves were fine. McBride and her duet partner, Pat Monahan from the band Train, gave a flawless rendition of the song. The bride and groom were glowing in their traditional gear. What threw things off irreparably was the audio treatment of the event--the officiant presiding over the wedding was amped up at various times so the audience could hear him conducting the ceremony, then faded out to allow McBride and Monahan's vocals, resulting in a rather schizophrenic experience overall.

Viewers of the show additionally seemed to find the wedding in poor taste overall, and took to Twitter in droves to express their disapproval. "Thought it tacky...what are people thinking??!" "This wedding at the ACM'S has to b one of the most awkward things ever," "I'm confused," "Stupidest thing I've seen all day."

To be fair, however, the wedding did have its share of positive commentary, with fans tweeting about their "chills," "tears," and how "adorable" and "sweet" the event was.

A few jokesters reserved their opinion and merely took a humorous approach to the whole event, tweeting about McBride's choice of dress. "Martina, everyone knows you don't wear white to a wedding!"

As for us--well, next time we're marrying in Vegas, we'll skip the ACMs and just look for the nearest ordained minister/Elvis impersonator. You know, something normal like that.
