Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy made waves at the 84th Academy Awards with a little chic-ret on her shoes. The best-supporting actress nominee looked the polar opposite of her hilarious character in the film, choosing a crystal-trimmed, empire-waist Marina Rinaldi dress for the Oscars red carpet. She revealed a surprising piece of trivia about her clutch and shoes: They were designed by Brian Atwood, and she and the "it" designer have been best friends since high school. And even cuter, her custom-made shoes have a special message from the designer inscribed on the bottom that says, "To my best friend."
McCarthy grew up in a farming town outside Plainfield, Illinois, and initially wanted to pursue fashion, briefly studying textiles in college and doing costuming for a dance company. It was fellow high school goth cohort Atwood who convinced her to move to New York and try her hand at standup, even styling her for her first open mike. Perhaps if it weren't for the designer, McCarthy wouldn't be at the Oscars today!
Both McCarthy and Atwood have come a long way from flipping through Vogue in their bedrooms together. As of last year, McCarthy went back to her design roots and was working on launching her own plus-size line. Hopefully the darling addition to her Oscar shoes will bring her good luck during the awards show!
