Florida QB Tyler Murphy transfers

Florida starting quarterback Tyler Murphy has decided to transfer.

Murphy is the seventh player to leave the program in the past week.

Murphy stepped in for former starter Jeff Driskel after Driskel was lost for the season with a broken leg during Week 3. Murphy threw for 1,216 yards with six touchdowns and was 2-4 in games he started.

But he suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder against LSU on Oct. 12, aggravated it in November and missed the final three games of the regular season. Murphy’s sister, Morgan Murphy, a basketball player at Binghamton, accused Florida of covering up the injury with a benching.

"Wish they would've done this weeks ago when they realize the severity instead of trying to cover it up & act like he was fine," Murphy wrote on Twitter. She later deleted the tweet.

Murphy had been the primary backup for the past three seasons before emerging as the starter. Coach Will Muschamp said following the season that the quarterbacking job would be open in 2014. That competition will now be between Driskel, Skyler Mornhinweg, who started the final three games of the year, and possibly recruit Will Grier, one of the nation’s top quarterbacking recruits, who is expected to sign with the Gators in February.

Murphy, who graduated on Saturday, will be eligible to transfer to another FBS program and play right away as a grad student.
