Ariana Grande supposedly has a good explanation for why her MTV Video Music Awards meet-and-greet this week left fans in tears and prompted one father to post a 2,700-word complaint letter on his blog.
On Tuesday, the author of the WordPress blog PrimalScreaming wrote that his daughters had a horrible, brief, impersonal exchange with pop star after winning a contest and traveling from Las Vegas to Los Angeles to "hang out with Ariana Grande."
"She spent perhaps 15 seconds with each of them," the father wrote. "This is not an exaggeration. They took an approved photo with her and that was it. No small talk. No banter." According to the father, Grande abruptly walked off without saying goodbye after taking a selfie with his daughter Jen, and asking security to make sure that Jen's sister deleted any other photos of Grande.
But Grande had an excuse: according to another fan who corresponded with Grande, the star walked off because she was reminded of her grandfather, who died in July. "A fan gave me a photo of me & my grandpa," Grande reportedly disclosed in a private message on Twitter. "I walked away because I didn't want them to see me start to cry. I am still mourning, and I wrote a letter to have sent to her afterward but MTV told me they had already left. My heart is still healing and it's moments like that that make it real again that he's gone… wasn't expecting it and [it] hit me like a ton of bricks."
But Jen and her older sister, Kelly, didn't get that message and complained on Twitter about their meeting with Grande:
This was Jen's second time seeing Grande. After Grande tweeted in 2011 that she would be visiting the Titanic exhibit at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, Jen convinced her father to take her in hopes of meeting the then-star of the Nickelodeon show Victorious. After waiting a few hours, Grande arrived; when she noticed the speechless teen smiling at her, she offered to take a picture with her. "It was a wonderful experience," Jen's father said.
Grande had a better fan meeting on Thursday, when she surprised two teen girls on the Today show. The "Problem" singer explained why her energy level needed a boost. "I'm really tired. I didn't sleep at all last night, but I'm really excited to be here," she said. "So I'm like running on excitement."
