‘Transformers’ 4 Beefs Up Cast with Chinese Actress Li Bingbing

Paramount Pictures announced yet another buzzworthy addition to its “Transformers 4” cast today, Chinese actress Li Bingbing.

Cinephiles might recognize Bingbing from her previous work in films like “Resident Evil: Retribution,” “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” and alongside Jet Li and Jackie Chan in 2008’s “Forbidden Kingdom.”

There are no details yet as to what kind of character Bingbing has signed on to play, but given her experience in and popularity for her action-oriented films and television shows in China, it is fairly safe to assume that she will not be playing a helpless damsel in distress. Perhaps she’ll be more edgy femme fatale or a possible villainess in cahoots with the previously-announced human baddie played by Kelsey Grammer?

Bingbing joins Grammer, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz and Sophia Myles in the upcoming film.

“I am excited to have Li Bingbing join our cast and to be shooting portions of the movie in her native China,” director Michael Bay said of the casting in a statement. “I have always aspired to work with the best actors and this cast is especially exciting now with the addition of Li.”

“I am thrilled to get to work with Michael Bay,” added an excited Bingbing. “‘Transformers’ has influenced generations in China and the movie franchise has a massive fan base. I am very happy to be able to join this international production. Thank you Paramount for the invitation! Looking forward to it!”

Not too much is known about the plot of the fourth film in this box office-busting, billion-dollar franchise, aside from some brief character descriptions and that the production will shoot in multiple locations in the U.S. and in China. We also know that Mark Wahlberg will play Flynn Vincent, father of the leading lady played by Nicola Peltz and that her onscreen boyfriend is the film’s chief protagonist, played by Jack Raynor.

“Transformers 4” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27th, 2014.
