Who would win an all-out brawl between Batman and Superman? It's easy to assume Superman, but Batman's a resourceful dude, and he could most likely find a way to get some kryptonite in his utility belt, right?
The "which superhero wins" question has caused many a friendship-ending debate -- debates which have raged on for many years. But now, thanks to the highly-anticipated video game "Injustice: Gods Among Us," countless friendships can be saved. And millions of dream matchups can finally come true.
That's because "Injustice" lets gamers pit all the big names in the D.C. Comics universe against each other in epic grudge matches that take place in extravagantly rendered battle arenas. Superman, Batman, Bane, Catwoman, Deathstroke, The Flash, The Joker, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor and on and on -- all with special moves and weapons, all set within an original story where it's hard to tell the heroes from the villains.
"I'm gonna sound like a shrill pitchman, but the game, dude, F***ing rocks. It's nuts!" says Kevin Smith, a guy who knows a thing or two about comic book characters, what with his AMC series "Comic Book Men," his many podcasts, including "Fatman on Batman," and his long-standing comic-book-world street cred.
Smith spoke to us on the phone today about "Injustice," and about the TV spot for the game that debuts today. Smith wrote, directed, and stars in the spot alongside his longtime sidekick, Jason Mewes ("Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" 2001). "He was kinda like riding shotgun, co-director on the spot," says Smith of his frequent collaborator, "He took a great interest because there was a kid playing a younger version of him, so he was like 'Dude! He's gotta get it right!"
When you watch the spot below, you can see the kid gets it right, portraying Jay in his youth debating a younger Smith about which superhero would win a theoretical grudge match. The spot gives you a sense of why the game should be fun in the first place.
"This is everything I loved from my childhood, this is all the characters I've always enjoyed playing," says Smith, "You punch a dude in Wayne Manor and he goes through Wayne Manor! You wind up in another room and you're fighting more!"
"Injustice" is another bold creation from NetherRealm Studios, the folks who brought you Mortal Kombat, a fighting game that was, quite literally, a game-changer. Smith believes NetherRealm has brought that same attention-to-detail to "Injustice."
"The amount of detail and work that went into the game -- I've seen every demo mode, I've seen every character played all the way through, I've seen all the special powers, which are like mind-bending -- the animation, the effort that goes into it, it's the best Justice League movie anyone will ever see. Especially because you get to be in charge and what not," says Smith.
You can get a really good sense of the game from the spot below, plus, it's always nice to catch up with Jay and Silent Bob. The game itself comes out April 16th, at which time we'll post the rest of our in-depth interview with Kevin Smith.
