Fans, cast members, and a shoeless Peter Jackson himself gathered in cities all over the world (and online) on Monday to participate in what was deemed "The Hobbit Fan Event" (or on Twitter, #HobbitFanEvent).
Here are the most important things we learned in advance of the Dec. 13 release of the highly anticipated sequel "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
1. First Things First: New Trailer!
Richard Armitage said he was revealing a "bit of a spoiler" when he relayed his character's favorite line from the movie, which is, "If this has to end in fire, then we will all burn together." Just a few minutes later Thorin Oakenshield said it in the brand spankin' new "Hobbit" trailer -- one that give us an extended look at Luke Evans' Bard the Bowman, some screen time for Orlando Bloom's fan fave Legolas, and most noteworthy, more Smaug, the titular dragon voiced by the ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch. 2. Gandalf Goes Off.
While many of us knew of Martin Freeman's free-wheeling middle finger on the many "The Hobbit" sets, we have just been apprised of the fact that Sir Ian McKellan has his own arsenal of offensive communiques. Yes, part of Jackson's behind-the-scenes footage that was live streamed on Monday afternoon revealed that Mr. McKellan has a bit of a potty mouth when he flubs his lines. And Jackson voiced his desire to get his massive stockpile of bloopers, jokes, and pranks from all of his J.R.R. Tolkein-based films into a forthcoming box set. Cross your fingers!
3. Ears Melt.
Evangeline Lily's do, anyway. Footage revealed the actress saying that her pointy Tauriel were melting because she kept "sweating them off."
4. Watch Out Kanye, a New 'Hobbit' Song Has Dropped.
And it's such a hot tune it makes all the dwarves throw their food in a music-loving frenzy (to the dismay of one elf).
5. Shoeless-ness Is Officially a Thing.
Before Shailene Woodley was doing it on the red carpet, Peter Jackson has long been proponent of shoeless-ness. Monday was no exception, when Jackson let his feet flag fly. But this time, Evangeline Lily joined in the fun, waving one gorgeous-looking khaki-colored pump in the air, exposing one of her lovely tootsies. Later during the live broadcast, New York-based host Anderson Cooper followed suit (or shoe?), removing at least one of his lace-ups.
6. Orlando Bloom Is a Dancing Fool.
As witnessed briefly during the fan event. Oh yeah, and girls still go crazy for him (but that's no secret):

7. Tinkerbell Is In the Movie (Sort of).
Evangeline Lily admitted that one of the main inspirations for Tauriel was, in fact, Tinkerbell from "Peter Pan"! "Tink is a bad a-- little fairy," the 34-year-old actress declared. "She is fierce. ... Somewhere in my brain those two things connected and she winded up being one of my inspirations for the role. ... They both fly through the air."
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" breathes its fire in theaters on Dec. 13.
