‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ Clip Pays Homage to Horror
Our exclusive clip (above) from the new "Paranormal Activity" movie is appropriately titled "In the Basement." But doesn't everyone know by now that you never, ever go in the basement ... especially if you're in a horror movie?
Then again, we wouldn't have a lot of horror movies if their characters actually had, you know, common sense, so get ready for this creepy if ill-advised scene from "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones," the Latino-themed spin-off of the popular horror franchise that skipped out on trick-or-treating in cinemas this past year after dominating the October box office since 2009.
"The Marked Ones" follows the familiar "PA" aesthetic of 'found footage,' though in this scene it also incorporates the first-person POV trick that lets you experience the horror through the eyes of the protagonist. And that's not the first nod to "The Blair Witch Project" in this clip, as our hero (presumably Jesse, played by Andrew Jacobs) is traversing a location that might remind you of the final moments of that 1999 mini-classic.
No, the scene doesn't feature poor Michael ominously facing a wall, unmoving with his back to the camera. But it does feature something that, without giving too much away, might make you recall two of the more memorable characters from Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining."
Ultimately, though, we're wondering who this "Cholo" guy is, and if he's okay. He probably isn't.
The clip is part of the film's "Scream in the New Year" promotion. Indeed, 2014 begins with a scream as "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" hits theaters this Friday, Jan. 3. Meanwhile, the main 'Katie and Kristi' storyline will continue in "Paranormal Activity 5" on Oct. 24.
