Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin Give Good Smolder in 'Labor Day' Clip

Now that's how you do "smoldering."

Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet give a master class in forbidden longing in this exclusive clip from "Labor Day," which hits theaters nationwide on Friday. Based on the novel by Joyce Maynard, the romantic film tells the story of Adele Wheeler (Winslet), a divorced mother raising a teenage son who shelters an escaped convict, Frank Chambers (Brolin). They fall in love even as the authorities close in on Frank's hiding spot.

Winslet earned a Golden Globe nomination (her ninth) for Best Actress in a Drama for her role as the damaged but unbroken Adele. Director Jason Reitman told Variety, "She makes those characters beautiful and sexual. I don’t know another actor who does that. I don’t know what I would have done if she’d said no." Winslet felt that Adele was a big departure from the strong, confident women she's used to playing. She told The Telegraph, "I have never really played a character that has considerably more vulnerability than strength... She felt very alien to me, every day."

"Labor Day" opens on Jan. 31.
