The 2014 BAFTA nominations have been announced and while the list is solid, there were still a few surprises to keep things interesting.

With an impressive 11 nominations, "Gravity" leads the pack, picking up nods for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Director (for Alfonso Cuarón), Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Special Visual Effects, and, predictably, Sandra Bullock is in the running for Leading Actress.

Equally impressive - or at least surprising: "Dallas Buyers Club," which has been scoring nods for stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto left, right, and center throughout awards season thus far, was shut out. However, this snub might have more to do with the fact that the film hasn't opened yet in Britain, so while it was technically eligible and screeners were sent out, it lacked the momentum that comes with the publicity and box-office support of its domestic rivals. In other words, this probably isn't a good indication of how it will fare with the Academy ... so you can relax, McConaufans.

"American Hustle" and "12 Years a Slave" tie for second place with 10 nominations each. The very different movies will be pitted against each other (among others) for Best Film, Best Director (David O. Russell and Steve McQueen, respectively), and Production Design. In addition, "Hustle" castmembers landed in each of the four acting categories (Christian Bale for Leading Actor, Amy Adams for Leading Actress, Bradley Cooper for Supporting Actor, and Jennifer Lawrence for Supporting Actress), while "Slave" scored in in the Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender) and Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) fields.

"Captain Phillips" missed making second place a three-way split by earning 9 nominations. Still, its list includes heavyweight categories such as Best Film, Director, and Leading Actor (Tom Hanks), along with Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, and Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi).

Rounding out the top tier are two films that shine new light on familiar faces: "Behind the Candelabra" (the HBO movie received a theatrical release overseas) and "Saving Mr. Banks," which snapped up five nominations each.

Interestingly, it was the Stephen Frears-directed British darling, "Philomena," rather than Scorsese's latest epic, "The Wolf of Wall Street," that nabbed the final Best Film slot. That said, Scorsese shouldn't feel too much sting, because he landed on the Best Director list, while Frears did not.

The BAFTAs will be held in London on Feb. 16.
