Here it is: our first official photo behind the scenes of the new "Star Wars" sequel revealing the return of one of the franchise's most beloved characters.
And judging by the look of things, R2-D2 looks... exactly the same.
Yeah, that's the thing about droids. They age terribly gracefully.
Director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and writer Lawrence Kasdan today released the pic on Twitter with the little guy along with this message: "Hi from the workshop! #StarWarsVII."
Yeah, no major secrets revealed here, but we anticipate a lot more kernals of detail to reveal themselves, especially since the movie is in full-on casting mode.
It should come as no surprise that good ol' R2 is in the mix. After all, Lucas said years ago that he always envisioned that both R2-D2 and C-3PO would appear in all of the "Star Wars" films (and so far they have made it through all six previous films, the "Clone Wars" TV series, and even the ill-fated "Star Wars Holiday Special").

Besides Abrams has a known soft spot for the diminutive droid. "R2's really been in all of the movies I've done, really for no other reason than I'm a huge fan," the filmmaker admitted to Yahoo Movies after we spotted the robot's cameos in "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness." The streak continues.
The crazily anticipated "Star Wars Episode VII" is due in theaters in December 2015.
