14 Things You Didn't See at the Film Independent Spirit Awards

With drinks on the table and milling about encouraged, Saturday's 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica was meant to be a daytime party, and it didn't disappoint.

But that much was obvious on your television sets and online during the telecast. From Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's buzzed-about appareance to Paula Patton flying fabulously solo, we kept track of all the intimate moments behind the scenes that you didn't see.

Here's what went down in between what Josh Welsh, the president of Film Independent, called "pretty people winning shiny things."

1. PDA-Fest for Brad and Angelina: Sure, you saw Hollywood's favorite couple all cuddled up every time "12 Years a Slave" won an award (which was five times so, yeah, you saw them quite a bit), but that wasn't just for show. After the movie won Best Feature, Angelina met up with her man backstage. When they were reunited, he told her he was going to join the rest of the winning posse in the press room. They shared a sweet kiss and then she shooed him off proudly and waited patiently. Aww…

2. Patton Stands Tall: No, we're not talking about the diminutive host of the afternoon's festivities, Patton Oswalt. Paula Patton, who announced her separation from husband Robin Thicke earlier in the week, impressed the masses with her appearance at the event. Not only did she look stunning in a short, yellow lace number, but she was smiling and appeared to be having a ball (although, sitting directly behind big winner Matthew McConaughey, how could she not?). While she only posed for photographers and skipped doing the rest of the press line, we overheard multiple people calling her brave. Go girl!

3. We'd Like to Thank Jared Leto: The "Dallas Buyers Club" actor took home the gong for Best Supporting Male, but really should've received a second one for best acceptance speech in all of awards season (and maybe ever). While some would argue he really did thank every man, woman, and tree that ever lived, given the sheer volume of names he mentioned in his hilarious and poignant monologue, there was one name we were surprised not to hear: Claire Danes. So much for that so-called history, eh?

4. The Rain and the Renner: Timing really is everything. The Spirit Awards take place in a tent, with the majority of the "backstage" area and what one might call a lobby all located outside. When the forecast called for torrential rain, organizers and attendees alike were clearly nervous. But, as the stars arrived and mimosas were passed, the sun was bright and shining. In fact, there was only about a 10-minute period of rough winds and rains that hit near the end of the ceremony. That worked out great for everyone… except "American Hustle" star Jeremy Renner. He had intended to slip out from backstage at that very moment but, alas, had to wait as his car had not yet arrived and the rain was beating down.

5. Proud Mama: Birthday girl Lupita Nyong'o received the award for Best Supporting Female and made a good point to thank her mother, who looked gorgeous in bright green as she sat by her daughter's side all afternoon. Dorothy Nyong'o's eyes got a bit misty as she watched Lupita on stage, and when her 31-year-old returned to the table, she gave her winner a big hug and kiss, pride seeming to ooze from her pores.

6. Rekindle? Our hearts went all aflutter when we watched exes (and "X-Men" co-stars) Michael Fassbender and Zoe Kravitz step outside mid-show together. Better yet, we loved seeing them sharing a smoke and laughing at each other's jokes. Could a re-coupling be in the works?

7. The Standing Ovation Awards: It's always interesting to note who pops out of their seat first when at least some portion of a crowd gets to their feet to celebrate a win. Reese Witherspoon was the first to cheer when Matthew McConaughey won for Best Male Lead for his performance in "Dallas Buyers Club," while Brad Pitt jumped up to honor the memorial to Philip Seymour Hoffman, Roger Ebert, and James Gandolfini. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paula Patton tied when celebrating "Fruitvale Station's" win for Best First Feature; after director Ryan Coogler's moving speech, many more were on their feet, including everyone at the "12 Years a Slave" tables, except Paul Dano. Not sure what that's about.

8. Couture Meets Comfort: "Divergent" star Shailene Woodley is known for her laid-back style, but we were still surprised to see her accessorize her two-piece Lyn Devon number with… a grey hooded sweatshirt? The actress stepped out of her car still wearing the fleece topper and even began posing with fans before realizing she was still wearing it and took it off. The hoodie was still off as Woodley made her way towards her seat in the tent and chatted up her "Descendants" director Alexander Payne. But the cozy piece was right back on – zipped, her hands in the front pockets, and all – by the time the awards show came to a close.

9. Special Moments in Footwear: The fine folks at home didn't get to see much of Patton Oswalt's clown-like shoes, but that wasn't the most interesting footwear of the evening. For starters, "Short Term 12" star Brie Larson was giving hugs and running around both the tent and outside – barefoot! – after her film won Best Editing. Best Supporting Female nominee Yolanda Ross, who was a vision in a hot orange dress, tried on a brightly-colored pair of New Balance Fresh Foam 980 sneakers at the gifting suite backstage about two hours before the show began… and never took them off. Thankfully, her publicist got a matching pair as well, so she was carrying around both of their high heels all afternoon.

10. Hamm and Beer: You probably already know this, but Jon Hamm is just cool. Right before the show was about to begin, he and his "Mad Men" co-star, Elisabeth Moss, posed for a few photos, but were sure to take a look at the pics and make sure all was well. Later, we spotted him making his way backstage – never in a hurry – with his goblet of Stella Artois still in hand. Why let a good beer go to waste?

11. Keanu, Keanu, Keanu! Brad and Angelina who? We have no real explanation for this one, but the energy in the room shifted when presenter Keanu Reeves walked in. One man grabbed him from across a table and pulled him in for quite the bear hug, Jared Leto gave him a nod early in his speech, and people were literally lined up to greet him when the show ended.

12. Clay Comes Out Even: On one hand, Andrew Dice Clay should be ecstatic that he was even at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, not to mention that he received a shout-out from Cate Blanchett when she accepted her award for Best Female Lead. On the other, ouch! We watched as the "Blue Jasmine" actor roamed around for a good five minutes unable to find his seat until organizers were able to help him out… and, even then, it took a few of 'em.

13. The Independent Spirit Lives On: Look, this awards show celebrates the filmmakers who made their movie on a dime, so we shouldn't have been surprised when we watched people wrap hunks of cheese in napkins and stuff them in their pockets or women packing two bottles of the tableside Patron tequila in their purses, right?

14. Röhm-ing for Wine: And then this happened to "American Hustle" actress Elisabeth Röhm…
