Jay-Z’s Evolution From Drug Dealer to Rapper Inspires A-Wax

For many former drug dealers, the music business presents a new and better way of life.

Pittsburg, California rapper A-Wax is one such success story. The artist who shares some of his crime tales on his recently released “Jesus Malverde” mixtape ranks his favorite MCS who made the transition from trapping to rapping.

Jay-Z is No. 1. “He started in the Marcy Projects and started trying to get out it just like everybody else,” A-Wax said. “Boy did he make it happen. … He’s moved on from that phase in his life and his music.”

Young Jeezy and Yo Gotti also made the cut.

A-Wax said each inspires him in a different way. “I take bits and pieces,” he said. “There are certain things I’ll look at and say, ‘I wouldn’t do it that way but there’s a lot of things where I’ll say, ‘That’s exactly how I need to do it.’”
