'The Simpsons,' 'Portlandia,' and 'Adventure Time' Among This Year's Early Emmy Winners

IFC's quirky sketch comedy "Portlandia," Cartoon Network's colorful oddball series "Adventure Time," and Fox's iconic longtime hit "The Simpsons" are all early Creative Arts Emmy winners — juried winners, that is.

What does it mean to be a juried winner? In a nutshell, a panel of professionals screens all of the entrants in certain categories, and yes, it is possible to award more than one Emmy in each category. In fact, the group could opt to not dole out any awards. After deliberations, the peer group votes, and only those with unanimous approval win.

"Portlandia" and CBS's "The 55th Annual Grammy Awards" are among the juried winners in the Outstanding Costumes for a Variety Program or Special category. "Adventure Time," "The Simpsons," and "Disney TRON: Uprising" are three of the series in for Outstanding Individual Achievement In Animation.

HBO's doc "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God," which examines the first known U.S. public protest of clerical sex crimes brought on by four brave deaf victims, is the sole winner in the Exceptional Merit In Documentary Filmmaking category.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will air on Saturday, 9/21 at 9 PM on FXX.
