Once again, Taylor Swift has proven that she's one of the gang.
The "Shake It Off" singer, 24, was photographed wearing a yellow "no its becky" T-shirt while out in Manhattan on Wednesday, making Tumblr erupt in celebration.
The line comes from an online hoax/mock PSA involving the pop star that originated on the social networking site. Several years back, a high school photo of Swift was posted and the accompanying caption said, "This is a picture of my friend Becky. She used to be a happy, popular girl until one night she snorted marijuana at a party and died instantly. Please, don't do marijuana. It's the most dangerous drug out there. Please don't wind up like Becky."
The black-and-white photo very obviously is a young Taylor, yet whenever anyone would note that under the picture, Tumblr users took to replying, "no its becky" — and the grammatically challenged comment took on a life of its own.
Fast-forward to earlier this month when Swift joined Tumblr and liked a "no its becky" post. The excitement over that was great — though nothing compared to how they've reacted since seeing her in the shirt last night. Look no further than the No Its Becky hashtag for hundreds of comments, including these:
Swift then took the whole thing a step further on Thursday when she posted a photo — of herself in the custom "becky" shirt — in a similar layout to her 1989 album cover and wrote, "I'm kind of rethinking the album cover." That post already has 12,300-plus likes after just a few hours.
Taylor has always been a fan-friendly star, but she's been making an extra effort to connect with her mass following as she launches her latest album, which sees her transitioning from country/pop to pop. She's held multiple events at her own homes in which she invited fans over to listen to her new songs. Those meet and greets involved the singer baking cookies for her guests — and letting them meet her cats and parents.
That's how Taylor – we mean Becky – rolls.
Catch Swift’s song in the movie One Chance. The film, which is about Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts, will launch Sept. 30 on Yahoo. Check back here to see the movie and watch the trailer now:
