"Not smiling makes me smile," Kanye West once famously tweeted.
The rapper's smile is not for public consumption, so don't you dare try to catch him in the act.
West was chatting and laughing with Bulls legend Scottie Pippin courtside at a Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls game when he was caught with his lips upturned and teeth showing. Ever attentive, Kanye shut that down the moment he realized he was on camera. Thanks to the Internet, the moment was captured for posterity.
This is not Kanye's first brilliant reaction to garner viral fame. A GIF from an MTV News interview has for years been the golden standard of reaction GIFs.
Kanye has also said his not smiling policy is his homage to the badasses of yesteryear.
"I looked at all these people’s photos [from the 1800s] and they look so real and their outfits were incredible and they weren’t smiling and people, you know the paparazzi, always come up to me, 'Why you not smiling?' and I think, not smiling makes me smile," West said at The Daily Front Row's Fashion Los Angeles Awards. "When you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling because it just wouldn’t look as cool."

But Kanye's betrothed, Kim Kardashian, has another reason for not smiling: "See I do smile... even laugh on occasion," she joked on Instagram. "Not too often though because it causes wrinkles."
Whether it's for dermal integrity or as a nod to the Industrial Revolution, there are plenty of reasons to never smile.
