If Kanye West is the new Walt Disney, then that would make Kim Kardashian … Marilyn Monroe? According to the rap genius, the answer is yes.
During the "Yeezus" singer's latest promotional blitz, West, 36, compared his baby mama/ fiancée/"most beautiful woman of all time" to the Hollywood legend.
"I have a love hate relationship with the paparazzi but actually I love them because they empower us over, ya know?" Kanye said during an interview with Power 105.1. "They are empowering us over Vanity Fair that want to say that Kate Upton is Marilyn Monroe. Kate Upton ain’t Marilyn Monroe. Kim is Marilyn Monroe, you know that. She was controversial. She [is] controversial."
In case you missed it, Upton, 21, was styled like the "Some Like It Hot" star for Vanity Fair's 100th issue in October.
This isn't the first time Kim has been compared to the iconic actress. Former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld made a similar statement in October.
While it's debatable, let's see how Kim Kardashian and Marilyn Monroe really stack up next to each another:
Kim: The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star is currently engaged to one of the biggest superstars on the planet, but even before Kanye, Kim kept famous company. For years, she was on-again, off-again with NFL star Reggie Bush, and who can forget her 72-day marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries? The 33-year-old also had brief flings with Halle Berry's ex Gabriel Aubry and singer Ray J. West will be Kim's third husband.
Marilyn: Nothing quite compares to Monroe's list of suitors. She had flings with John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy (allegedly), Marlon Brando, and was married three times. But perhaps her most high-profile relationship was the one she shared with her second husband, Joe DiMaggio. Although she was only married to the New York Yankees superstar less than a year, their love affair picked back up before she passed away at the age of 36. If the paparazzi were around in the '50s you can bet they would have been just as sought after as Kimye is today.
Kim: Since hooking up with Kanye, Kim has undergone quite the style transformation. She now calls Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci a close friend and is usually dressed in head to toe couture while her Kardashian Collection line is available in Sears. Unfortunately, she's often found herself the target of fashion critics, especially while pregnant. Though she was constantly scrutinized for her weight gain, for the most part, Kim's voluptuous body is celebrated.
Marilyn: Monroe's famous curves are what made her a universal sex symbol. Marilyn — whose dress size has oddly been a debated topic for decades — is considered a fashion icon and her timeless look is often channeled in fashion shoots today … including one featuring Kim Kardashian herself!
Kim: The reality star's net worth is estimated to be around $40 million, thanks to her family's TV show, the Kardashian Collection, and various endorsement deals. As of June 2013 (via Forbes), Kim has already made around $10 million just this year alone, and comes in at number 66 on their World's Most Powerful Celebrities list.
Marilyn: No reality show here … Monroe made her wealth from modeling and acting during her time. The late actress came in sixth on Forbes's 2013 Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, making an estimated $15 million as of June, which puts her slightly ahead of Kim. So where is the money coming from? Just a few examples … Macy’s is selling a line of Monroe clothes, Marilyn Monroe cafes and spas are popping up around the country, and Monroe is the new face of Chanel No. 5.
Kim: Let us not forget how Kardashian first got notoriety: She made a sex tape with Ray J! In 2007, Kim went from Paris Hilton's sidekick to finally being in the limelight herself once that leaked. Eight months later, E! green lit "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." After the huge production that was her wedding to Kris Humphries, Kim's likeability factor definitely took a hit when that marriage failed after it was so heavily promoted. Because her divorce proceedings lasted a lot longer than their relationship, Kim was wrapped up in legal drama even when she was pregnant with North West. Though her critics argue that she is famous for nothing, Kim is clearly doing something right as she captures headlines daily with her every move.
Marilyn: Monroe was making headlines long before gossip blogs existed. She was certainly no stranger to controversy! When it came to romance, her choice in men was always questionable (cough cough, JFK). There are even rumors that a sex tape of the famed actress exists. But in the dozens of biographies that have been written about the star, her abuse of drugs and alcohol has always been alleged.
Notable Career Moments
Kim: Post-sex tape, the majority of Kim's success has stemmed from "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and spinoffs, "Kourtney and Kim Take New York," and "Kourtney and Kim Take Miami." She did a spread for Playboy, had a stint on "Dancing With the Stars," and has dabbled in film, like Tyler Perry's flick "Temptation."
Marilyn: The actress, model, and singer starred in a number of commercially successful films in the 1950s and early 1960s like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "How to Marry a Millionaire," and "Bus Stop." Monroe even won a Golden Globe for "Some Like It Hot." Also, who can forget the iconic scene in "The Seven Year Itch" where Marilyn is standing above a subway grate with the wind blowing up that famed white dress. To top things off, she was Playboy's first Playmate of the Month (Hugh Hefner really has Marilyn to thank for Playboy's success).
So what do you think? Do you think the Kim Kardashian-Marilyn Monroe comparison is valid?
