giving birth to her daughter, Rosemary, six weeks ago — but not the kind of health kick you might think.Gaby Hoffmann has been on a serious post-baby health kick since
The Girls star hasn’t been counting calories or hitting the gym for hours on end (at least, not that she's admitted): She's been eating her placenta, or, more accurately, drinking her placenta. According to the 32-year-old thesp, this has been the key to recovery after the baby.
"Placenta, placenta, placenta. Just eat that s--t up, and it does a girl good!" she told People magazine. She added that it helped boost her energy and her milk supply. But just how did she get it down?
"I made smoothies out of it for three weeks," she revealed. "I had a home birth, so my midwife and my doula took it and cut it up into 20 pieces and froze it, and every day, I put it in a blender with strawberries and blueberries and guava juice and a banana, and I drank that s--t up." The new mom insisted the process was no big deal. "You don't taste [it]," she chimed. (Still… you know it's there and you can never un-know that. Trust us. We've tried.)
But Hoffmann is hardly the first Hollywood star to take the plunge into placenta eating. January Jones openly discussed her experience with the process shortly after giving birth to her son Xandar. She didn't make smoothies though.
"Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins,” she explained before adding, "It's not witchcraft-y or anything. I suggest it to all moms!"
Mayim Bialik is also a placenta-eating enthusiast and took to her blog to express her support for its benefits.
"I ingested my placenta. I am not a bad person, a crazy person, or a freak and neither is Alicia Silverstone or January Jones," the Big Bang Theory star wrote in a post titled "You're Not Gross." "Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth."
Other stars who have done the deed include the aforementioned Silverstone, as well as Tia and Tamera Mowry. It's probably worth noting, however, that Tia did not eat her own placenta, but tried her sister's (lovingly blended with brandy) during the season finale of their reality show.
While the benefits of the practice remain up for debate, we're pretty sure Hoffmann's smoothies have a better chance of being useful than Tia's mixed drink.
