Unlike her buddy Selena Gomez, you won't find Demi Lovato imbibing her first legal cocktail at some Hollywood hot spot on her 21st birthday.

The "X Factor" star, who doesn't drink following her 2010 stint in rehab, will mark the milestone on August 20 while in Kenya, Africa. Lovato traveled there with friends and family members to help build a school and take a sunset safari on a volunteer trip for the the global charity Free the Children.

"My 21st birthday is gonna be different than what I expected a couple of years ago," she told omg! before her August 14 departure. "I'm really, really excited."

And Lovato didn't even have to go seeking the adventure with the organization with a mission to educate and empower citizens to become active citizens. They came to her.

"The mock itinerary they gave me fell on my birthday, and I was like, 'OK, it's a sign. I get it,'" she said.

The "Heart Attack" singer noted that the trip will be an incredible gift on its own, but …

"I mean, if anyone did want to throw in like a Cartier Love Bracelet, I'm really down to receive it, you know what I mean?" she joked about the designer piece, which is priced starting at more than $5,000.

Not surprisingly, the former Disney star named another piece of jewelry as the best birthday gift she's ever received.

"My dad gave me a big diamond ring when I turned 18," she shared, referring to the stepfather who raised her. "It was a ring that I had worn on the red carpet for something and I was like 'I love this. This is so beautiful. Can I buy it?' … I forgot about it. My dad ended up giving it to me."

But Lovato — who will be joining the cast of "Glee" in its new season — has more than baubles on her mind. She has several clear goals for the coming year.

"I hope to accomplish having more singles on the radio," she said. "I want to continue to release music, and give people joy in hearing it. I hope to find the winner of 'The X Factor' 2013. Also, just be a good person and just be happy and healthy."

Happy birthday, Demi!
