Rolling Stone magazine sent the Twitter-verse into overdrive on Wednesday due to the controversy surrounding their cover story featuring alleged Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover.
Social media erupted with calls of outrage over the perceived insensitivity of the magazine to make the decision to glorify a person considered by many to be a terrorist.
The Mayor of Boston, Tom Menino wrote a scathing letter to Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, the non-profit DoSomething.org started a petition against the magazine, and the drug store chain CVS even put out a statement saying it wouldn't carry the issue.
The magazine issued the following statement in response as a precursor to the online version of their article: "Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens."
