The Internet is mourning the loss of… Benedict Cumberbatch's bachelorhood.
The beloved British actor and Internet sensation broke the news Wednesday that he's off the market. The 38-year-old is engaged to theater director and actress Sophie Hunter.
Most people didn't realize the Sherlock star was even dating Hunter, who has appeared in the film Vanity Fair. That was until an old school engagement announcement ran in London's The Times today announcing that "Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch," was engaged to "Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter … and Charles Hunter."
In April, reports started to circulate that he was off the market with an unnamed source telling Showbiz Spy that he had a girlfriend. "He's keeping it very hush-hush," said the tipster. "But it's safe to say he's smitten." In June, they were photographed together at the French Open tennis matches.
Cumberbatch hasn't exactly been forthcoming about details of the romance, but explained why to Time magazine last year, saying, "Every time I’m seen at a bar with a girl I get photographed. Anyone with a computer knows my entire dating history. I get it. Paparazzi is an inescapable, immovable obstacle." (His previous relationships include a 12-year romance with actress Olivia Poulet, who was his college sweetheart, and a year-long relationship with London-based artist Anna James, which ended in 2012.)
Cumberbatch, whose other roles have included portraying Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate and the villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, has become an Internet crush through the years - just ask the Cumberbitches, his devoted online following. There have been quite a few #tears and #heartbreak over his engagement announcement:

I think I just read that Benedict Cumberbatch is getting married. I don't know what to do with myself any more...

And one person wisely predicted:
If Benedict Cumberbatch gets married around the same time as the royal baby is born, I'm pretty sure the British Internet will implode.

Let's hope he confers with Will and Kate before his big day and plans accordingly.
