Blissfield's Movies on Lane battling inclement weather; including more community groups

BLISSFIELD — An effort is being made in Blissfield to include more community groups in the village’s monthly Movies on Lane nights, which are held during the summer months from June to August.

Thus far, weather has been uncooperative for Blissfield’s first two editions of its 2023 summer series.

The most recent Movies on Lane July 20 was relocated from downtown Blissfield to the gymnasium at Blissfield Middle School because of inclement weather. The film that was shown last week was “The Addams Family 2.”

Asia Hawkins, right, Blissfield Community Development Fellow with Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), looks over the "Addams Family" themed photos printed for Eleanor Lowes, 6, of Blissfield during the village's July 20 edition of its Movies on Lane summer programming. Because of inclement weather, all Movies on Lane happenings last week were relocated from downtown Blissfield to the gymnasium at Blissfield Middle School.

In June, another round of inclement weather caused the first Movies on Lane event of the year to be postponed. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” has been rescheduled for Aug. 31.

The original August film on the event’s calendar is Aug. 17 when guests of all ages can flock to downtown Blissfield and watch the recently released animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

Movies are shown on an inflatable screen at dusk, according to an announcement from Emilie Mullins, Movies on Lane chairperson. People are encouraged to bring their own chair or other forms of seating. Movies are scheduled for the third Thursday of the month, but will be rescheduled if weather becomes an issue.

All of the action each month, weather permitting, happens right on the streets of downtown Blissfield in the business district. The streets are closed to motorists starting at 6:30 p.m.

Concessions, outdoor games, cornhole, basketball, food trucks and extended hours for downtown businesses are some of the things people can expect each month at Movies on Lane. All of the entertainment is free.

The Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library partners with Movies on Lane to provide a movie-themed craft, specific to each movie.

“Blissfield Girl Scout Troop 60250 is selling cookies and lemonade at this year's Movie on Lane events,” Mullins said. “... For the final movie, Royal Arbor Bliss (of Gleaner Life Insurance Society) will be giving everyone in attendance free ice cream from Sugar Boys (Soda Fountain).”

Movies on Lane is put together by committee members and representatives from Blissfield’s Downtown Development Authority/Main Street committee. More information about the events can be found on the Downtown Blissfield Facebook page or by visiting www.blissfieldmainstreet.com.
