Jake Olson made it back onto the field for USC.

Late in Saturday’s 38-10 home win over Oregon State, Olson, who is blind, snapped on an extra point for the second time for the Trojans. The snap was perfect once again.

Olson’s story has been well-documented, but it’s worth repeating. Olson lost the sight in both of his eyes — one at age 10, the other at age 12 — because he was born with retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the retina. When his right eye was removed in 2009, then-USC coach Pete Carroll invited Olson to meet the team. From there, he and his family developed a relationship with the program that culminated in Olson joining the team.

Olson, who snapped in high school, was granted a waiver to practice with the team in fall 2015. He participated in the 2016 spring game, but it wasn’t until Week 1 against Western Michigan that Olson snapped in a regular season game.

USC coach Clay Helton reached out to WMU’s Tim Lester ahead of time to make sure the Broncos were aware of what was happening if Olson was brought into the game. Helton reached out via email during the week and the two went over the details on the field before the game. If Helton was going to put Olson into the game, he would call timeout and look over toward Lester, who would let his team know the situation. The officials were aware of their plan as well.

After a late USC touchdown, Helton put Olson in the game and the plan was executed perfectly, giving Olson his big moment.

“I just loved being out there,” Olson said after the game. “It was an awesome feeling, something that I’ll remember forever. Getting to snap at USC as a football player … I’m trying to say as much as I can, because I can’t quite believe it yet.”
