On the opening night of AGT’s season 14, Lee shone with a performance of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You.”

Without the healing properties of music, Lee’s struggles would be considerably greater.

“We found out that he loved music really early on,” explained Kodi’s mom Tina, who accompanied him to the stage. “Through music and performing, he was able to withstand living in this world. Because when you’re autistic, it’s really hard to do what everyone else does. It actually has saved his life, playing music.”

It was tears all round as the judges took turns praising the young contestant. “Not only do we feel the authenticity of what you do but you’re a great inspiration and a great talent. It was amazing,” enthused Howie Mandel. “Your voice blew us all away,” Julianne Hough said. “I heard you, I felt you and it was beautiful.”

Simon Cowell didn’t mince his words. “What just happened there was extraordinary,” he remarked. “Your voice is absolutely fantastic, you have a really beautiful tone. Thank you so much for trusting us on this show. I’m going to remember this moment for the rest of my life.”

Gabrielle Union made sure Kodi and his mom would never forget the moment. She slapped down the golden buzzer, the first of the 2019 season. Watch below (and bring Kleenex).
