Blake Shelton is a funny kooky guy — a conclusion we’ve come to after listening to the country star unexpectedly bare his soul. And by bare his soul, we mean tell the hilarious tale of what it was like to own multiple pet turkeys Imagine this: Shelton used to fight his pet turkey every day — it’s too good.

His turkey tale starts off on a more somber note when The Voice judge is asked about his former pet while on Martina McBride’s podcast. “It’s still hard to talk about my pet turkey because it’s dead,” Shelton revealed on Vocal Point. “I had several pet turkeys over the years, probably three of them. And I just kept renaming them ‘Turkey’ because I figured, they’re not going to live very long and this way it’ll seem like I’ve had a pet for ten or twelve years.”

And Shelton explains his lack of personal attachment minutes later: “When I still lived in Tennessee, I used to go out and purposely try to get to my truck, no trouble,” the “God’s Country” singer explains. “And I would end up in a fistfight with that turkey…I remember slapping it in the face as hard as I can just to get it off of me. Nothing you could do would deter this turkey.”

McBride chimes in: “They’re strong, aren’t they?” (If you’ve ever encountered a turkey in the wild, it’s true — they’re no joke.)

“Strong, and just committed to whipping your ass before you get in the car,” Shelton agrees. “Every day! It had decent spurs, but it was mostly its wings. It would just beat you to death.”

Okay, so Shelton and his turkeys didn’t have the best pet-owner relationship out there. But don’t worry: Shelton got his own weird revenge on his feathered friends.

“I used to feed my turkey turkey,” Shelton confesses. “One Thanksgiving, I went out in the backyard — it stayed by the backdoor so it could beat the hell out of you every time you came outside, that was its game — and one day I walked out there with a plate after Thanksgiving of stovetop stuffing.”

“I just threw it out in the yard and watched it eat that,” Shelton recalls, chuckling. “Just knowing it was stuffing itself. Something about that made me so happy.”

And something about hearing Shelton tell these stories just makes me so happy. As Thanksgiving approaches, let’s all be thankful that our turkeys are on the plate — not hovering menacingly by our backdoors.
