Blake Shelton praises wife Gwen Stefani for being ‘a mother first and foremost’: ‘That’s rare in this business’

The way Blake Shelton tells it, Gwen Stefani is unlike any other celebrity he’s ever met.
As Stefani recently became the 2,764th person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Shelton praised his wife of two years, who headed the rock band No Doubt before launching her own solo career. She’s also been a coach on “The Voice” on-and-off for seven seasons.
“From music, television and movies to fashion and beauty, she has risen to the top over and over again with her unique style that has made the world fall in love with her — not as much as me, though,” he said.

Shelton also noted that Stefani is an “exceptionally talented” songwriter who has written “99%” of her music. That success, he said, has made her “one of the biggest stars in the world” and worthy of a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
But during the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony earlier this month, Shelton joked that Stefani was being “honored for her side project.” Because in his eyes, Stefani embraces another role as her No. 1 job: motherhood.

Stefani’s love for being a mother was one of the first things Shelton said he noticed about her when they met on the set of “The Voice” in 2014.
“She drove herself to work in a black minivan with car seats in it,” Shelton said in his speech. “She didn’t roll in with security. She came in with a baby and two little boys which, at the time, worked like security because nobody was going near. It was chaos.
“It was clear to me that she was a mother first and foremost over anything else in the world. That was her No. 1 job,” he continued. “And now, standing here almost 10 years later, after I first met her, I can say without question that being a mother is still the most important thing in her life.
“I got to tell you all, that’s rare in this business.”
Stefani was visibly emotional as Shelton gave his speech. The “Don’t Speak” singer told Fox News Digital that she was “really holding back” as her husband spoke.
“To hear Blake’s words and what he chose to talk about, like we didn’t discuss it, I didn’t even think about it,” she said. “I thought he was going to come up there and make a bunch of jokes and roast me. It was really beautiful, emotional.”

Stefani and Shelton met several years ago on the set of “The Voice,” and soon bonded over their recent divorces — Stefani from rock singer Gavin Rossdale and Shelton from country star Miranda Lambert. Stefani said there “was a lot of healing to do” at the time, per the Deseret News.
The pair’s first song together, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” was featured on Shelton’s 2016 album “If I’m Honest,” Today.com reported. The duo hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart with “Nobody But You” in 2019, according to Billboard. Their duet “Happy Anywhere” hit No. 1 on the same chart in 2020.

As a coach on “The Voice,” Stefani has put topping the country charts to her advantage. In a promo for the current season — the first without Shelton — Stefani proudly mentioned having two No. 1 country hits in an effort to draw more contestants to her team.
But country queen Reba McEntire, who has taken Shelton’s place, quickly quipped: “I’ve had more than two.”
Stefani married Shelton in 2021. Earlier this year, the 54-year-old artist opened up about how the relationship has shaped her songwriting.
“I spent my whole life trying to find true love and I have it right now and it’s just been the most incredible thing,” she told Glamour magazine. “And I spent most of my life writing about heartache and now I’m writing about my love. It’s an amazing thing.”
