Blake and Gwen’s Relationship Brings New Dynamic to ‘The Voice’

The 12th season of The Voice got underway Monday night, and right off the bat, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s relationship took center stage. In the opening, Blake said, “My job on this show is to try and win, even when my competition is my girlfriend, and I’m not talking about Adam.”

The last time Gwen was a coach on the show, she and Blake were both going through very public breakups with their significant others. And while, at the time, it seemed as if the Voice couple might just be a rebound fling, it’s certainly turned into the real thing since then. So with Gwen and Blake in a full-fledged relationship, it was just a matter of time before their love got in the way of their competitive spirit.

Throughout the night, Blake and Gwen championed each other. But when they were the only ones to turn their chairs for Stephanie Rice, Gwen was the only one being championed. After Gwen pleaded her case to Stephanie, Alicia said, “I just felt that was really a beautiful moment right there that shouldn’t be ignored.” Adam quickly followed that statement by adding, “Very perceptive, Alicia. I noticed the same thing.” And it wasn’t just Adam and Alicia who were supporting team Gwen. If Blake was honest, he knew Gwen was the better choice, saying, “I would love to work with you, but I think you’ve already probably made your decision, and I’m good with it.”

After Adam went over to check Blake’s temperature, Stephanie chose Gwen, and Adam felt he was watching his old cowboy buddy walk off into the sunset. Then Adam described Blake giving up on Stephanie by doing an impression of Blake in a Wild West duel, as he just laid down his finger gun and walked away.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
