Blackpink at MetLife Stadium causes pink glow over East Rutherford, seen from airplanes

What was that pink glow over East Rutherford on the evening of Friday, Aug. 11?

It was the K-pop group Blackpink, performing the first of their two Born Pink World Tour Encore shows at MetLife Stadium. The pink glow was spotted from airliners overhead.

“It looked so amazing and breathtaking even more knowing it’s one of my favorite groups,” said Anayeli Chavez, who was flying in from Charlotte when she saw the glow. “I’m so proud of them.”

Chavez will be at MetLife for the group's show there on Saturday, Aug. 12.

“I also saw them in Coachella and it was something I will always remember,” said Chavez via email. Check out her video shot from a plane below.

The pink glow was caused by stage lighting and the fans who shined their Blackpink light sticks, available for $36.23 on the official merch web site of YG Entertainment, the managers of Blackpink.

Blackpink played their EDM-infused hits, starting with the latest single, “Pink Venom,” to set dances routines and a live band for two hours on Friday. Group members Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa performed as an ensemble with a large accompanying dance troupe, and also solo sets mid-show.

The Blinks, aka the Blackpink fans, were with them every dance step of the way. The group also played two concerts in November at the Prudential Center in Newark. They're the highest charting female K-pop group on the Billboard charts. Their 2022 album, “Born Pink,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard album chart.

Their shows at MetLife are the first time a female K-pop group has headlined two-in-a-row shows at the stadium.

“New Jersey is so wild!” said Rose after the group performed “Shut Down.” “It's nice to be back here in this beautiful city.”

Rose then looked at the fans in the full upper deck of MetLife while the crowd, which included former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, cheered.

“New Jersey has leveled up!” she said.

Blackpink performs Saturday night at MetLife. Tickets, starting at $129.50 before fees, were available through Ticketmaster as of press time.
