In order to raise awareness to the economic power of Black Americans, Tuesday, July 7 has officially been marked as Blackout Day. According to the movement’s official statement, it is a “day of solidarity in America where not one Black person in America spends a dollar.” However, those looking to shop are encouraged to do so by spending their money solely at Black-owned businesses.
The hashtag #BlackOutDay2020 is trending nationwide on Twitter, with celebrities such as Kerry Washington taking to social media to stand in solidarity.

The viral social media initiative has gained the support of major companies such as Dr. Bronner’s Macy’s, Proctor & Gamble and Cisco Systems. CNN pointed out that Black Americans spent more than $1 trillion on consumer goods in 2018 alone, according to Nielsen.
One way to help end systemic racism? Support Black-owned businesses.

In a video shared by social media personality and activist Calvin Martyr, who has been campaigning Blackout Day, he explained, “The only way we’re going to get change is when they fear hurting us like we fear hurting them.” The idea is said to be in efforts to “change policies and address institutional racism.”
