So when someone asks you what you want to do, you’ve got your plans ready to go.

Honoring the past: Fall River celebrates its own Black “superhero,” Lewis Latimer

On Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m., local “superhero” Lewis Latimer will be receiving a long overdue honor. Latimer was a 19th-century Black innovator who helped Thomas Edison invent the light bulb, and whose inventions included an early form of air conditioning. He’s buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, and until now, has had no headstone. That will change on Saturday. There will be a ceremony to install a monument to him at his gravesite, an effort that was spearheaded by Frank Bonafilia and Jon Cropper, of the nationally renowned Edison Awards and its Latimer Fellowship program. Members of the public are invited, as will officials and honored guests, including another Black superhero: Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales in the “Spider-Verse” animated films.
