Black Panther or Star-Lord? Anna Faris hilariously says son is conflicted over his favorite superhero

Many parents look forward to dinnertime with their kids, and that’s definitely the case for Anna Faris. The busy Mom star loves cooking with her 6-year-old son, Jack, whom she shares with ex-husband Chris Pratt, and the time they spend together when they’re finished. Cooking was an activity she did with her mother, so Faris found it important to carry on the tradition.

“We had family dinners — with my brothers, with my dad — almost every night. It’s something I always wanted to make sure I prioritized with my son,” Faris told Yahoo Entertainment in an interview Wednesday. “Kids want to spend time with their parents. I mean, they may not kind of realize that, but they do. I see that with Jack — he really wants to spend time with us, [but] I don’t think he would ever admit that!”

Faris credits her mother with getting Jack started in the kitchen when he was a little over 2 years old. “I don’t know if his achievements were all that great,” the actress quipped, “but he developed a love for it.”

The Overboard star explained that a typical night in with Jack usually consists of the two of them cooking together, setting the table, and then talking over dinner — and their recent chat may be of interest to Pratt.

“I just annoyed [Jack] with questions. We were talking about [who] his favorite superhero is and I think he felt some loyalty — like he thought he should say Star-Lord,” Faris recounted, laughing. Pratt plays Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. “He was like, well … Black Panther!”

In the end, Jack decided that he could pick them both, declaring “Star-Lord and Black Panther” as his favorites.

“It’s just the simple act of engaging your kid,” said Faris. “It takes a degree of work to try and relate to a 6-year-old, but it gives us a chance to talk and for him to tell me about his friends at school, what he liked and didn’t like.”

Faris added, “When we cook together or hike together — that’s another activity we do — it’s in those moments that I realize just how important it is. It gives me a chance to focus on him and for him to pay attention to me.”

That’s why Faris teamed up with Uncle Ben’s for the rice company’s Homework Pass Challenge, an initiative aimed at getting more families cooking together by swapping homework for kitchen time. For one week at participating schools, students can cook with their families with the brand’s “homework pass kit,” which guides them through learning while cooking with interactive questions, activities, and topics to talk about at the table.

“I had a lot of passion towards this [partnership] because I grew up cooking with my mom, and it was such an important way for us to bond,” Faris noted. “When Uncle Ben’s asked me to partner with them, it just really resonated with me. That’s really what I remember growing up, is just bonding time with my parents. It feels like our lives are getting increasingly more busy, and it’s getting harder to carve out activities that you can do together as a family. … It was just a perfect fit.”

Most recently, Faris and Jack — who can be a picky eater at times — whipped up a curry dish with Uncle Ben’s basmati rice. “And it was delicious! It wasn’t very spicy because of Jack. I called it butter chicken and he loved it,” she says. “He made the rice. I didn’t let him chop the chicken, obviously, but we’re working up to it!”

Anyone else hoping that MasterChef Junior is in Jack’s future?
