“Black Mirror” returns in 2025 with 6 new episodes, including 'USS Callister' sequel

The "Star Trek"-parodying season 4 episode will be the first chapter of this anthology series to get a direct follow-up.

Black Mirror is one of the best-known anthology shows on modern television, but it's finally ready to do a sequel episode. Netflix announced Thursday that Charlie Brooker's sci-fi series is set to return in 2025 with six new episodes — including a direct follow-up to season 4 premiere "USS Callister."

EW has not been shy about celebrating "USS Callister" since the episode's 2017 release; we currently rank it as the third-best episode in Black Mirror history, which might even be too low for some fans. The episode starred Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly, a disgruntled employee at a major tech company who vents his frustrations against his coworkers by creating sentient digital clones of them and trapping them in a Star Trek-like game where he is the captain and his word goes.

The episode also starred Cristin Milioti, in the role of one of these digital avatars who finds herself trapped in this hellish situation and decides to lead a ship mutiny against Daly. Years before Barbie, Milioti's character was especially devastated to realize that her avatar within the games had no genitals.

Netflix only gives this as a premise for the upcoming sequel episode: "Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning."

It seems, then, like the episode might pick up with Milioti and her crewmates as they now pilot their captain-less ship through strange new territory. No casting news has been made official for the new episode, yet.

The original episode also featured Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Billy Magnussen, Milanka Brooks, and Osy Ikhile, as well as fun cameos from Plemons real-life wife Kirsten Dunst and Aaron Paul.
