‘Black Mirror’ to return in 2025 for seventh season that includes sequel to ‘USS Callister’

Netflix’s darkly funny dystopian sci-fi anthology “Black Mirror” has done a lot of different types of episodes throughout its decade-plus run. It’s done swooning romance (“San Junipero”), terrifying horror (“Loch Henry”), and innovative choose-your-own-adventure (“Bandersnatch”). But it’s never done a sequel…until now. 

The streaming service announced Thursday that the previously announced seventh season will premiere sometime in 2025 with six new episodes, including one that’s a sequel to “USS Callister,” the Season 4 premiere that won the Emmy for Best Television Movie in 2018.

Netflix’s announcement of the premiere year and sequel features a brief description of the episode: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.” 

“USS Callister” tells the story of Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), a programmer who’s bitter that his contributions to the creation of a massively multiplayer online game are underappreciated by his colleagues. As a form of revenge, he creates a Star Trek-inspired mission inside the game in which he’s the Kirk-like captain and sentient renderings of his colleagues are his abused crew. When a new character (Cristin Milioti) joins the game, she inspires the others to rise up against Daly. 

The episode was directed by Toby Haynes and written by William Bridges and series creator Charlie Brooker. In addition to Best TV Movie, it won Emmys for picture editing, sound editing, and writing in the limited series, movie, or special category. 

“Black Mirror” premiered in the UK in 2011 and was released globally on Netflix in 2014. The series became a Netflix original starting with Season 3 in 2016. Season 6 was released in 2023 after a four-year break. 

The series has won eight Emmys from 14 nominations, including three straight Best TV Movie wins from 2017 to 2019. A targeted 2021 rule change means that ‘Black Mirror’ now competes in the Limited or Anthology Series Category. Season 6 is the first one eligible under the new rules.
