Celebrate Black History Month with Trump and ‘Desus & Mero’
It’s the start of Black History Month, and what better way to celebrate it than with Desus & Mero, who devoted the opening segment of their Feb. 1 show by covering President Donald Trump’s own celebration of Black History Month — or as Desus put it, “He turned it into Trump History Month.”
Trump’s televised meeting with various black influencers on Monday morning was met with widespread incredulity when the President referred to the 19th century writer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass as “an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice.” Desus said that Trump seems to think Douglass is “someone who works on the 17th floor.” Mero, warming to the topic, impersonated Trump defending himself: “What do you mean I don’t know who he is? I saw him that time he knocked down Mike Tyson.”
As always, Desus and Mero inserted some sharp commentary into their comedy, noting that Trump mentioned Martin Luther King, Jr., because “Martin Luther King is 99 percent of Black History Month — the other 1 percent is the guy with the peanuts.”
