Black Excellence Takes Over The 75th Primetime Emmys Red Carpet

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards returned on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday (Jan. 15), live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Television’s biggest night included more than a few special moments, such as a Martin reunion, first-time Emmy winners, and a red carpet full of Black excellence.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 2024 Emmys opened with a touching monologue from the Black-ish lead, who paid homage to television royalty from the past. Anderson recited theme songs from classics including Mister Rogers’ NeighborhoodGood TimesThe Facts of Life, and morewith help of a choir. Additionally, Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne all joined together onstage for a Martin reunion, where they joked about being snubbed by the Emmys during their run. The cast also shouted out Thomas Mikal Ford who played Tommy on the show and died in 2016.

The 2024 Emmys saw Black stars deservingly receive their just-due as Quinta Brunson made history as the first Black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series in over 30 years. Additionally, Ayo Edebiri had a historic feat as she scored Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series, making her the third-ever Black woman to win in that category since Jackée Harry in 1987 and Lee Ralph in 2022.

Amongst other winners included Sam Richardson, Storm Reid, Keke Palmer, Niecy Nash, RuPaul, Trevor Noah, and more.
