Bitterly cold temperatures forecast for northeast Wisconsin throughout the week

Thirty-one days of above-normal temperatures end as two Arctic airmasses are forecast to bring subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills throughout Wisconsin, especially on Tuesday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

Wind chills will drop to the negative teens and 20s Monday, then sink to the negative 20s and 30s Tuesday. While temperatures are expected to rise to highs of teens and 20s Wednesday and Thursday, there's a chance for a brief second Arctic surge Friday, when the wind chills are forecast to drop into the negative 20s again.

The weather service advises people to cover all exposed skin when heading outdoors. When it gets this cold outside, frostbite can happen in as little as 30 minutes.

While temperatures are also expected to be bitterly cold in Milwaukee and Madison, this month is expected to be one of the top five warmest Januarys on record for both cities.
