Billy Idol Says the Best Part About Being a Granddad of Four Is Not Having to ‘Discipline’ Them (Exclusive)

The rockstar is granddad to son Brant's two kids and daughter Bonnie's two kids

Billy Idol loves being a grandfather — especially since it means he gets to play with his grandkids.

The 68-year-old rocker spoke with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview for this week's issue, opening up about how he balances his rock and roll lifestyle with being a doting granddad. The "Rebel Yell" singer is a proud grandfather to his son Brant's daughter McKenzie, 3, and infant son Mason and his daughter Bonnie's daughters Poppy, 3, and MaryJane, 2.

"It is really lovely. It's nice, I've got the best of both worlds," Idol says of his music and family life. "But it's been lovely and it's all worked out in an incredible way that I could never imagine."

Though his grandkids are still young, Idol says that granddaughters Poppy and McKenzie have "seen what granddad does."

"McKenzie, she wanted to come the next night. She came one night, she went, 'Can we see granddad again tonight?' " the rocker recalls.

When they aren't seeing him on stage, Idol spends time with his grandkids painting pictures and playing with them.

"That's lovely about being granddad, you're not disciplining them. You're more giving them advice if they ask you stuff like that," Idol says. "So the pressure isn't the same as being a parent where you're having to discipline...it's quite different."

In addition to Brant and Bonnie, 34, Idol is dad to son Willem, 35.

In September, the musician shared photos on Instagram as he enjoyed some time with Brant and his family.

"Lovely family visit from my Long Island grandchildren Mason and McKenzie yesterday," he wrote, adding, "I had lots of fun!"

The next night, Idol revealed that the older of Brant's two kids came to see him play a show at King's Theatre in Brooklyn. Posing with McKenzie, he wrote, "Had a lovely visit from my granddaughter McKenzie backstage at the kings theatre 🎭 yesterday… also with my son @brant_northridge_broad … also McKenzie started school recently."

Brant also shared photos from the big day on his Instagram, writing, "Beautiful day hanging with grand dad."
